   Ayer leía sobre las tradiciones familiares y las fiestas de fin de año. Nosotros tenemos la suerte de que hace calor y las reuniones son compartidas, agradables, los niños se entretienen afuera y nosotros disfrutamos del verano con todas sus cosas ricas. En cada casa hay algún momento especial, puede ser una oración, un momento para recordar a los que no están y sus historias, quizás es cuando se abren los regalos, o cuando llega el plato de fondo a la mesa. Todas esas cosas van haciendo recuerdos que le dan sentido y trascendencia a estas fiestas, son los momentos de los cuales nos sentimos realmente agradecidos.

   Yesterday I was reading about family traditions and the end of the year holidays. We are lucky that it's warm outside and gatherings are shared, enjoyable, children play in the yard and we enjoy the summer with all its delicious things. In every house there is a special moment, may be a prayer, a moment to remind those who are not here an their life stories, perhaps when the gifts are opened, or when the main course arrives at the table. All these things are making memories that give meaning and significance to these festivities, those are the moments of which we are truly grateful.


   A veces cometemos el error de correr de un lugar a otro para alcanzar a estar en varias partes en un solo día, nos solemos enojar, pelear, y perdemos la oportunidad de ir creando nuestras propias tradiciones y recuerdos para nuestros niños. Hay algunas muy lindas que heredamos de nuestros padres, pero también podemos añadir las nuestras. Nosotros rezamos, ponemos a Jesús en el pesebre, preparamos un pic-nic para el Viejito y todos se van a acostar. Es un ritual muy esperado, hecho con cariño y con ansiedad también. Todos juran que van a quedarse despiertos en sus camas, pero luego empiezan a sonar los ronquidos. Y al día siguiente están arriba antes que el sol, nos van a despertar y esperan cada año dos cosas: un libro y un ratón. Un ratón para cada niño se quedó intruseando entre medio de los paquetes, ellos eligen el suyo y después de un rato se sientan todos a leer. Se van a acordar siempre. ¿Ustedes tienen algunas tradiciones ya?

    Uno de diciembre, empezamos oficialmente le mes de las fiestas de fin de año. Con eso nos baja la necesidad de juntarnos con los amigos de la vida, los del colegio, o los compañeros de trabajo, para cerrar el año y demostrar que nos importa esa amistad. Siempre hay alguien que organiza el amigo secreto, así que para ellos acá dejo algunas alternativas poco convencionales, pero muy buenas:

   December one, we are officially starting festivity season. There is always someone hosting a secret santa party, for them I'm leaving here some unconventional but good alternatives:

Se trata de buscar algo que nos encante a nosotros y multiplicarlo por la cantidad de invitados incluyéndonos. Algo barato, obvio, pero que quiero para mí. Por ejemplo, una barra de chocolate bitter con mazapán x 5. Entonces a la hora de repartir, entre aperitivo y galletas, la cosa se transforma en uno de esos programas gringos divertidos en que todos en el público se llevan los premios y salen con un cajón: Yo traje.... ¡chocolates para todos! Eh! (aplausos)

   Si se juntan más amigos de confianza pueden buscar cada uno un regalo que les encantaría tener, con un límite de precio fijado desde antes. Lo envuelven con gracia, porque la presentación hace mucho en este caso. Cuando llegan todos, se juntan todos los regalos en un lugar y se hacen en papelitos tantos números como personas haya. Los meten en un recipiente doblados y  cada uno saca uno, para ver en qué orden van a sacar los regalos. La gracia de esto es que nadie se queda sin si alguno no puede llegar y además se puede jugar un juego entretenido. El primero saca su regalo y el que sigue puede elegir entre el que está abierto o sacar uno cerrado, si elige el ya abierto, se lo entregan y el que queda sin tiene que abrir otro. Por lo tanto a uno le conviene ser el último, para elegir lo que más le guste! Hay que tener buen humor y uno se ríe muchísimo en el proceso.

Therefore, you want to be the last one and get to pick you favorite from all! You laugh quite a lot during the process.

   Mirándolo objetivamente, no es que necesitemos regalos, así que podemos ayudar a otros que sí los necesitan y aprovechar de juntarnos para eso y pasarlo bien. El que está a cargo busca alguna organización para ayudar, ojalá de niños o ancianos, y les encarga a todos un regalo o un aporte que traer. Se juntan todos para hacer una tarjeta cariñosa o dedicatorias y se llevan al día siguiente. Este sistema siempre es bueno y se siente bien, pero es especialmente bueno cuando uno no conoce tanto los gustos de los demás y termina buscando algo genérico, como en las fiestas de la oficina. Un dato para los chilenos: a través de correos de chile pueden apadrinar a un niño de escasos recursos, recibir su carta para el viejito pascuero y buscarles algo. Si se lo pueden ir a dejar, mejor, si no pueden, lo mandan como encomienda. Abajo pueden encontrar más información, pinchen la foto y van a cada institución.

   Objectively speaking, it's not that we need presents, so we could help others that truly need them and gather for that and to have a good time. The one hosting the party can pick a non-profit organization to help, better if for kids in need or the eldest, and ask the rest to bring a gift or donation. You all write some cards or inscriptions together and deliver them on the next day. This is always something good to do and feels good too, but it seems even better when you don't know the others tastes that much, so you end up getting something generic, like for office parties.    Ayer era el último día de vacaciones de verano. Estuvieron muy buenas, las disfrutamos mucho, paseamos, conocimos lugares nuevos, dormimos, comimos cosas ricas y algunos crecieron mucho también.  Hicimos una fiesta a la hora de almuerzo para celebrarlo, pusimos la mesa linda en el jardín y cocinamos unos tallarines con cúrcuma y tomatitos de coctail salteados para chuparse los bigotes! Ahora estoy viendo las fotos temprano en la mañana, porque ya se fueron todos al colegio, al primer día de clases y suspiro pensando en las próximas vacaciones de verano.    Yesterday was our last day of summer recess. It was good, we enjoyed every minute of it, we got to travel around, to know new places, we slept a lot, ate nice meals and some of us grew many inches too. We had a lunch party to celebrate,we set a nice table in the garden and made some delicious cucrcuma spaghettis with sauted cherry tomatoes! Now I'm looking through the photos early in the morning, because kids left to school today, for their first day and I sigh thinking of the next summer recess.    Hoy les voy a mostrar cómo hacer en la casa un a torta harto sana y muy rica y fácil de hacer. Es un invento de mi mamá, modificado por la necesidad, porque alguna vez no tuve los mismos ingredientes o los implementos que necesitaba. Ahora es tan fácil que casi se puede hacer en un camping, o sea que en un departamento con una cocina precaria, como éste, también se puede. Vamos a hacer una torta de chocolate, nueces y zanahoria!!    Después de leer un artículo me quedé pensando en la tradición de los regalos de Pascua. A todos nos gusta recibir algo de vez en cuando, es verdad, pero parece que a mí lo que más me gusta es la tradición y el cariño que van detrás. Esos detalles que le ponemos a la casa, las sorpresas que les tenemos a los más chicos, y abrir algo y darse cuenta de que alguien pensó en uno de verdad. Todas esas cosas hacen buenos recuerdos después, que son al final lo que queda.  En la casa, es el Viejo Pascuero el que viene a dejar los regalos que el Niño Jesús mandó (así resultó la fusión de nuestras dos familias de origen! y si uno es creyente se asemeja algo a la verdad, cierto?), le tenemos galletitas y un vaso de leche, y zanahorias para los renos, él deja una carta dando las gracias con su  letra tiritona y crespa. Los regalos no son a cambio de portarse bien, son por que sí, por cariño. Hay dos para cada uno, un libro y algo más que sea especial, no en la forma cara, sino en lo pensado, casi nunca me fijo en lo que han pedido. Algunas familias usan una regla de tres: un libro, algo que necesiten y algo que quieran. ¿Cómo lo hacen ustedes? ¿Qué regalan, cuáles son sus tradiciones? ¿Mandan tarjetas?    Esta semana y las que siguen vamos a hacer algunos regalos hechos a mano, para que ustedes los hagan también en la casa. Son baratos, lindos, hechos con cariño y siempre los reciben con una sonrisa. <3

   After reading a post I kept thinking about the giving tradition around this time of the year. We all like to receive something every once in a while, true, but what I like the most is tradition and care behind this holidays. Those details in our homes, surprises we have for the little ones, and open something and feel that somebody really thought about us. Those are the things that make good memories, which is what lasts. At our home, Santa is bringing what baby Jesus sent us (that's how our fusion turned! if you are believer is kind of true, isn't it?), we have milk and cookies for him and carrots for the reindeers, and he leaves a thank you note with shaky curly handwrite. Presents doesn't come in exchange of good behavior, they are just because, out of love. There are two for each: a book and something else, as special as we can, not in the expensive way, but in the thoughtful one, I almost never go to the wanted list. Ayer tuvimos fiesta en la casa, un aniversario especial. Había que tener torta, pero el tiempo estaba escaso. Bastan sólo 15 minutos para tener la solución, una torta de galletas con relleno. A continuación la receta. <3
