es hora de sembrar! / it's time to seed!

Es agosto, el invierno está terminando y eso significa que: ¡es hora de hacer almácigos! Así tendremos verduras frescas en primavera y verano. No hay nada que me guste más que sembrar y esperar a que aparezcan los brotes; me asomo todos los días a mirar.

It´s August, winter is ending and that means: It´s time to make seedbeds! This way we can have fresh vegetables in spring and summer. There´s nothing I enjoy more than planting seeds and waiting until the sprouts appear. I take a peek every day.

Lo bueno de los almácigos es que se pueden hacer en cualquier parte: en la misma tierra, envases de yogur, cajas de huevos, maceteros o cualquier tipo de recipiente que no libere ningún químico al estar mojado. Es muy importante que las semillas y luego los brotes estén siempre con la tierra húmeda y en un ambiente tibio, así crecerán más rápido.

Good thing about seedbeds is that you can make them anywhere: on the soil, in yogurt packages, egg boxes, flowerpots or any container that doesn't release toxic chemicals while wet. The most important thing is that the seeds and the sprouts must be al all times wet and warm so they can grow faster.

Este año mi huerto tendrá cilantro, perejil, acelga (para la sopa de la guagua), tomates cherry y zapallos italianos o zucchini. ¿Tu qué vas a sembrar?

1.- Llenen 1/3 del recipiente que hayan elegido con arena o piedrecillas. Esto ayudará al drenaje. / Fill 1/3 of the container of your Choice with sand or pebbles, this will help drain the container.

2.-Llenen otro tercio con tierra y ahí pongan las semillas tapándolas luego con el último tercio. / Fill the second third of the container with soil and place the seeds, covering them with the last third of soil.

3.-Por último, se toma una botella transparente, del tamaño que se necesite y se corta por la mitad. La mitad de arriba se pone por sobre el recipiente que contiene las semillas y se saca la tapa para que haya ventilación. ¡Et voilà! / The last thing is to take a transparent plastic bottle, the size you need and cut it in half as shown. Put the upper half on the container and remove the cap for ventilation. Et voilà!

-La mitad de abajo se puede usar de macetero para sembrar más verduras. Sólo basta con hacer uno o dos agujeros abajo para que el agua drene. / The other half can be used as a seedbed container aswell, just remembre to make a few holes to drain.

-Una idea simpática es hacer pequeños letreros para saber en qué lugar se plantó cada tipo de semilla, se le puede pedir a los niños que dibujen cada tipo de vegetal sembrado. Bueno, la verdad es que yo nunca lo hago porque parte de la diversión es que todos adivinemos a qué vegetal pertenece cada recipiente con brotes. /A good idea is to make little signs to know where you planted each kind of seed, or let your kids draw them. The truth is I never do it because part of the fun is to guess what kind of vegetables do the sprouts belong to.
