Hay algún magnetismo especial entre los niños que ya están teniendo conciencia del mundo, digamos desde los 6 años en adelante, y las noticias. Les atrae como miel a las abejas, quieren quedarse viendo y aprender de todo lo que sale, es como que ven una ventana abierta. El problema es el calibre de las historias que salen, cada día pasan cosas más raras y macabras en nuestros países y a lo largo del mundo, además de investigaciones periodísticas a veces morbosas y demasiados minutos de conversaciones sin contenido ni aporte de deportistas (con todo respeto, pero así es). Convengamos en que las noticias son en general probablemente para niños mayores de 14, de hecho hasta no son para uno algunos días.

   There is some special magnetism between children that are already aware of the world, say from age 6 on, and the news. They are attracted like bees to honey, they want to stay watching and learning from everything that comes out, it's like they if they see an open window. The problem is the caliber of the stories coming out, every day more strange and macabre things happen in our countries and throughout the world, shown alongside with sometimes morbid investigative journalism and too many minutes of conversation without content or contribution from sports players (with all respect but it's true). Let's admit that the news are in general probably for children over 14, in fact some days they aren't even for us.

   Pero ¿cómo hacemos entonces para acercar a los más chicos a lo que está pasando en el mundo? ¿Es bueno que sepan las cosas, que estén informados? Algo que tenemos que pensar es que pueden saber cualquiera de esas noticias a través de los compañeros, quizás más exageradas o con detalles gráficos. Por eso conviene adelantarse y explicarles nosotros, sobre todo en los casos de noticias más chocantes y que puedan tener relación más directa con nuestra comunidad. Siempre nos van a creer más a nosotros y van a sentir que pueden preguntarnos si tienen alguna duda.

   But how do we bring younger children to what is happening in the world? Is it good for them to know things, to be informed? Something we have to think about is that they can get to know any such news through peers, perhaps more exaggerated or with graphic details. So we should come forward and explain them some stories, especially in cases of shocking news that may have more direct relation with our community. They are always going to us believe better and they will feel they can ask anything if they have questions.

   ¿Y cómo lo abordamos? De repente el diario es una mejor idea que los noticiarios de la televisión, porque se fijan en las imágenes, que generalmente son menos intensas que los videos, y en los titulares. Siempre necesitan explicación de los titulares, porque hay palabras que no entienden y sentidos que no captan, así que hay que dejarlos que pregunten, tomar con seriedad esa pregunta y contestarla con el criterio de menos es más, es decir, con lo necesario para darles los conceptos que quieren, sin entrar en detalles gráficos. A veces nos piden que les contemos por qué o para qué pasan muchas cosas y ese es el momento en que podemos unir esas cosas que pasan en el mundo que están descubriendo con todos los valores, ideales y principios que les queremos regalar para la vida. Además no tenemos que olvidarnos de darles siempre sensación de seguridad y protección, y de mostrarnos siempre abiertos a conversar de los temas de actualidad.

   And how do we approach this? Maybe the newspaper is a better idea than television news, because kids focus on images, which are generally less intense than the videos, and in the headlines. They always need explanation from the headlines, because there are words they don't understand and meanings that they don't capture, so you have to let them ask, take seriously the question and answer with the approach of less is more, that is, with enough to give them the concepts they want, without going into graphic detail. They sometimes ask us why or how those things happen and that is when we can join those things in the world which they are discovering with all the values, ideals and principles that we want to give them for life. Also we musn't forget to always set the feeling of safety and protection, and always be open to talk about current topics.
